What Does It Mean To Be ‘Saved’?

I Want To Go To Heaven.

When you know you have done something ‘wrong’, what do you do?

Do you think of an excuse?

Do you justify your actions?

Do you question the rules? (I know I do… Ha.)

Or, do you admit your guilt?

Do you confess that you made a mistake and commit to fixing any damage you may have caused?

Have you ever done something so bad that you feel like there is nothing anyone can do to make up for how badly you messed things up?

You can see where I am going, right?

Is this just another thread of questions that creates a need so that I can ‘sell’ you an answer?

Ha.

NO! No. No.

There is nothing for sale here. Breath a sigh of relief…

But, the answer to your plea for help can definitely be satisfied in an eternal way.

If you have ever heard a ‘born-again’ Christian say that they have been ‘saved‘, here is how that works…

First of all, you must understand that God loves you and He has a plan for you.

This might be hard to believe depending on what environment you grew up in. A lot of terrible things might have happened to you up until this point.

Or, you may have the impression that your life is perfect and you don’t need God’s love or His plan for your life.

The whole concept of salvation is absolutely necessary no matter which category you put yourself in and here is why:

Everyone has sinned. No one measures up to God’s glory.

Romans 3:23

We all NEED salvation because…

When you sin, the pay you get is death. But God gives you the gift of eternal life. That’s because of what Christ Jesus our Lord has done.

Romans 6:23

And what exactly did God do through Jesus?

God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son. Anyone who believes in him will not die but will have eternal life.

John 3:16

This is the ultimate sacrifice to show how much we sinners mean to God.

Jesus was the only person who ever walked this earth to live a perfect life. And with this perfect example, what does God do to show His love to all the rest of us?

But here is how God has shown his love for us. While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:8

And if that display of sacrificial love wasn’t enough, God goes a step further and tells us that…

…Christ died for our sins, just as Scripture said He would. He was buried. He was raised from the dead on the third day, just as Scripture said he would be.

1 Corinthians 15:3-4

By rising from the dead, Jesus is telling us that…

… “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

John 14:6

So, what do we have to ‘do’ to receive this offer of salvation through Jesus?

We can’t actually DO anything. All the good deeds in the world won’t buy us a ticket to the table in heaven.

God’s grace is the only thing we can have faith in to satisfy the huge mistakes we have made.

And that grace is through His Son, Jesus Christ.

All we have to believe is that we are sinners (that’s easy, right?), and that Jesus died for our sins.

We must ask for God’s forgiveness.

And, one of the most important things that our culture of ‘lukewarm’ Christians forget is that we must turn away from our sins.

This is called repentance.

Honesty with ourselves is important, but to really follow Christ, we need to ask God to help us follow all of His commands.

God loves the attitude of our hearts when we ask Jesus to be a part of our life, but to truly accept Christ as Savior we must also choose to follow Him in everything.

Here is a beautiful example of a prayer you might use to ask God for the salvation that Jesus offers:

Dear God, I know I have sinned and I need your forgiveness. I believe that You sent Jesus as Your Son to be an example for me. I believe that Jesus died in my place for the sins I have committed. You raised Him from the dead and He is still alive today through the Holy Spirit with us. I want to follow Jesus’ example of a perfect life and trust Him to guide me everyday as I strive to do Your will. In His Name, Amen.

Amen! Hallelujah!

And now what?

I am saved, and what do I do now?

The answer to that question and every question about how we should live our lives is in the Bible.

How awesome is that?!

It’s true that EVERY question we have can be answered by the Bible.

There are many controversial topics today that we are unsure about. The Bible leads us on the right path for all of them.

Here is a very short list of some of the topics that we have looked at on this blog: List of Apples

If you have prayed the prayer above in the past or just did so today, you are blessed. Please don’t be afraid to share your choice with your family, friends and loved ones in a respectful way.

God moved in your heart and He can do the same in theirs as well.

I say that with a sense of urgency.

After all, it is only eternity we are talking about here!

Again, we must continually grow in our own faith and as we do so, feel free to respectfully share the grace of God with others. Only God can save, and nothing we say is going to force someone to believe what we do.

God Bless!
